Rugby Golf Club was inaugurated in 1891. Mr. Morris Davies and Mr. Sedgewick were responsible for forming the club and it is to these men that many generations of Rugby golfers owe a debt of gratitude. The club membership never exceeded 40 in the early years. |

Membership rose to nearly 400 in the early 1920’s but in the following years during the depression dropped to 120. Something had to be done to improve the course and encourage new members to join. Subscriptions were doubled, enabling small improvements to be made. A 14 year lease was obtained and with the gradual increase in numbers the old shed that served as a pavilion became inadequate and so a clubhouse was built. The opening ceremony of the new building was performed by Mr. C H Fuller on the 4 June 1927 |

Before 1935, the golf course was split. The six holes on the land on the North side of Clifton Road (only very recently converted to housing) were abandoned and incorporated on land that was leased from Rugby Town Council, together with land adjoining the main portion of the course owned by Mr. Lee. This made the course far more compact. The new lease negotiated with the Council then put the club on a more permanent basis. |

Unfortunately, in 1941 three of the 18 holes were requisitioned for agricultural purposes to help meet the war effort. Towards the end of 1947, with no hope of regaining these three holes on the East side of the canal, it was decided to construct a course with 18 holes on the remaining land. Accordingly, James Braid, the well known golf professional and course designer, was invited to help the club. He visited in 1949 and a comprehensive scheme of improvements was agreed. The reconstructed course was officially opened on the 14 May 1949 with an exhibition match. |

One dark moment in the history of Rugby Golf Club was when the clubhouse was destroyed by fire on the 27 May 1956. Valuable club records and memorabilia were lost forever. A sub-committee was formed and an appeal for funds launched, but before proceeding with the new clubhouse the committee had to be sure of the tenure of the land. Following discussions with both landlords (Rugby Borough Council and Mr. Allen) a new lease of 50 years was agreed beginning from the day the existing lease expired until 2006. Plans took shape , the building was started and by Christmas 1957 the new clubhouse was being used. |

It was also during 1957 that the club was incorporated under the 1948 Companies Act and became Rugby Golf Club Limited on the 30 April. |

With membership on the increase it was decided to extend the clubhouse to include a dining room (later to become the snooker room), a changing room and shop for the professional. Further extensions were carried out in 1966 and again in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Throughout the first hundred years various committees have endeavoured to improve the course and clubhouse amenities for the members and this still applies. The membership in 2004 is over 700 and the clubhouse has recently been refurbished. |

The course has seen many changes over the years and is thought by many professionals and amateurs alike that although not long, 5614 yards, par 68, its many natural features make it a thinking mans course. One of its feature is the now redundant railway viaduct built circa 1885. It is a friendly club and together with its splendid layout makes it well worth a visit. |
